Case Study: Nevada GrantLab

Nevada GrantLab was created to help nonprofits build their readiness to compete for major federal grants, then help them navigate rigorous compliance and reporting requirements. GrantLab’s team of experts offer technical support that’s highly valuable within a system that’s not easy to explain. They needed a brand and communications strategy that would simplify all the complexity without oversimplifying the inherent difficulties of cause-based work.

OUR APPROACH

What happens when nonprofits are fully resourced?

Bringing more federal dollars to Nevada was the mission. Grants is in the name and a big part of the work. But instead of centering communications around grants themselves, we explored: What happens when nonprofits are fully resourced?

Messaging shifted from describing federal grants and GrantLab’s technical services to highlighting the day-to-day outcomes achieved with more sustainable funds, increased confidence pursuing opportunities, and teams well-equipped to manage more resources in the first place. GrantLab need to be positioned as a capacity-building partner that equips organizations for long-term success, rather than a transactional grant-writing service.

COMMUNICATIONS GOALS

* Celebrate Nevada’s nonprofit sector by recognizing the work organizations are already doing.

* Clarify the challenge as a systemic funding gap, not a deficiency in nonprofit commitment, talent, or effectiveness.

 

* Shift the narrative from “helping struggling nonprofits” to “unlocking resources that enable organizations to expand their impact.

 

* Reinforce that nonprofits are vital and that increased capacity in the sector leads to stronger communities, greater access to services, and more resources flowing into Nevada.

VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS

The visual communications approach reinforced the central messaging principle: Nevada nonprofits are capable, impactful organizations that deserve greater access to resources. Imagery celebrated the diversity and effectiveness of the sector, showcasing the people, causes, and communities improving quality of life across the state. GrantLab’s brand expression struck a careful balance between expertise and approachability. Sophisticated enough to instill confidence in its federal funding knowledge, yet welcoming enough to reduce the intimidation often associated with grants.

When materials featured grant requirements, deadlines, and eligibility criteria, the information was broken into digestible design, making opportunities easier to scan, understand, and act upon. This reduced cognitive overload and made navigating federal funding feel more accessible to busy nonprofit professionals.
